The protagonist Nie Liuyun is a poor young man with a dark underbelly but a kind and loyal character. He encounters his adulterous senior brother Bei Mingxue by chance, and is later adopted as his apprentice. The senior brother gives Nie Liuyun the Bei Ming Manual, a secret technique created by his master. He inadvertently develops the secret technique that his senior brother has never been able to understand.
Dongfang Wan'er and Nie Liuyun are together. She is quirky, witty, and he is loyal and kind.
