Stories heard from my parents. From the resumption of the college entrance examination in 1977 to 2007, an ordinary mountain village in northwestern Shanxi experienced ups and downs in the past 30 years. These include household-based production contracting, individual contracting, merging villages and towns, resettlement and relocation, etc. Under a series of social backgrounds, the inevitable contradictions arise from the constant competition in status, wealth, cognition, ideological awareness, and educational level of different characters in different stages of history. The protagonist did not finish high school and was unable to take the college entrance examination due to his composition. He studied as a blacksmith, sold tofu, and served as a militia captain. Finally, he went to Sichuan to marry a Sichuan wife. After a series of conflicts caused by poverty, he finally settled in the county and sent his children to college. Stories are just stories, not critical in any way. The people of that era did not have much culture, but they had very pure beliefs, a spirit of continuous struggle for self-improvement, a brave spirit of resistance, and a fearless spirit of sacrifice. Simple and profound, it is these spirits that water the root culture of this piece of yellow land, making it flourish with leaves, peaches and plums. This novel and its characters are purely fictitious. Any similarity is purely coincidental and should not be imitated.
