A young man and woman living in the north of North Korea ended up in the south due to some strange combination of circumstances. Since then, they have suffered a lifelong tragedy.
Before the war, the male protagonist Jin Changhao went to visit relatives at his sister's house in the south. Suddenly, the war broke out and he was unable to return. He was isolated in Chunchuan, south of the 38th Parallel. Later he was forced to join the South Korean Army.
Chang Hao followed the troops into the Changjin Lake. In this battle, Chang Hao's entire army was wiped out, and only Chang Hao escaped death and hid in the mountains.
While struggling on the edge of life and death, he encounters the heroine Park Soon-yan passing through the mountains. The kind-hearted Shunyan rescued Changhao and helped him return to his hometown in Xipu. After returning home, Chang Hao was suspected of defecting and was placed under control.
The two people, who have been in love for a long time, meet to escape from the north and make a living on the border between China and North Korea. But it was dispersed by the crowd. Changhao squeezed onto the transport ship bound for Busan, and Shunyan returned to Changjin Lake alone.
Shunyan gave birth to his and Changhao's daughter. In the following sixty years, Shunyan was treated unfairly and lived a lonely life in hardship.
