The novel tells the love story of Yushun, a farm girl by Changjin Lake, and Li Guowen, a wounded volunteer soldier, and the endless harm their fate has brought to them.
Li Guowen and his troops engaged in a desperate battle with the US military on the banks of Changjin Lake. All his troops were killed, except for him who was seriously injured and was rescued by Wen Yushun's family.
