I dig some in every direction, as long as I don't dig through. Can't the extra soil on the bottom be used to reach the top? There are many other ways. If you can change it to that, it would be more physically demanding. There were no supplies at the time.

This book is pretty good, at least I finished it, but the ending was so abrupt that I thought I had to go further in.
