The protagonist is greedy for petty gains and cannot figure out priorities.
He clearly knew that the formation test was the most important, but he still spent time refining weapons within the tight time limit of one year without being able to distinguish the priorities. The cool thing about Cultivation to Immortality is that the protagonist has a definite goal and a clear main line, and all the branches serve the main line. Wenzhao Gong's Cultivation to Immortality is excellent because he grasps this point. Other authors often don't understand it.
