Rhetoric of Fiction
About This Novel
This book mainly discusses the historical development of Western novels, sorts out the evolution of novel techniques and theories, critically examines popular modern views on novels, establishes classic modern novel theories, and lays a solid foundation for the creation, criticism, and research of modern novels. Some concepts and terms put forward in the book, such as "implied author" and "unreliable narrator", are all classic terms in the field of narratology today. "The Rhetoric of Novel" was published in 1961 and has been reprinted many times since then. It is listed as a classic of modern Western novel theory. The "American Encyclopedia" hailed the book as "a milestone in the aesthetics of novels in the 20th century."

Telling objective stories is far more popular than telling subjective truths, because people are different individuals. Just like there are a thousand Hamlets for a thousand people, stories are easier for people to accept than truths.
The novel needs a sense of immersion. When a flower on the grass is described and what is presented to us is a whole grassland full of vigorous growth and flowers, then it is successful.

Tell and Show
Telling and showing are easy to distinguish. The narrator tells you who the hero is and what his character is like from the beginning, while showing allows readers to judge and think for themselves through the script.
