Opening verse The supreme and profound Dharma is encountered in millions of calamities. Now that I have accepted and upheld what I have seen and heard, I am willing to understand the true meaning of the Tathagata. Myoho Lotus Sutra Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva Translated by Master Yao Qin Tripitaka Kumarajiva At that time, Bodhisattva Infinite Intent started from his position, raised his right shoulder, put his palms together and faced the Buddha, and said this: Master, why is Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva called Avalokitesvara? The Buddha told Bodhisattva Inexhaustible Intent: Good man, if there are countless hundreds of thousands of billions of people who are reborn and suffer from all kinds of sufferings, if they hear the name of Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva and single-mindedly recite its name, Avalokitesvara will immediately listen to its sound, and they will all be liberated. If someone holds the name of Avalokitesvara and is thrown into a fire, the fire will not burn him because of the Bodhisattva's majestic power. If it is drifted by the great water and is called by its name, it will reach a shallow place. If hundreds of thousands of millions of sentient beings enter the sea in search of gold, silver, lapis lazuli, clams, agates, amber, pearls and other treasures, and a black wind blows on their boats and they drift into the ghost kingdom of Rakshasa, if there is even one person among them who calls the name of Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva, all of them will be liberated from the troubles of Rakshasa. Because of this cause and condition, it is called Guanyin. If there is another person who is about to be harmed and calls the name of Guanshiyin Bodhisattva, he will find and break the sword and stick he holds, and he will be liberated. If the three thousand great thousand lands are filled with yakshas and rakshasas who want to annoy people and hear the name of Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva, these evil ghosts will not be able to look at them with evil eyes, but will harm them. Suppose there is a person who, whether guilty or innocent, has weapons, shackles, and checks tied to his body, and whoever calls the name of Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva will all be broken, and he will be liberated. Suppose there is a merchant in the Three Thousand Thousand Thousand Thousand Lands filled with resentful thieves, and he takes all the merchants carrying heavy treasures through a dangerous road, and one of them says this: Good men, do not be afraid, you should wholeheartedly call the name of Guanshiyin Bodhisattva. When all the merchants heard this, they all spoke loudly: Namo Guanshiyin Bodhisattva. Call it a name and you will be liberated. Infinite meaning, the majestic power of Guanshiyin Bodhisattva is so majestic. If there are sentient beings who have more than enough lustful desires and always recite and respect Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva, they will be free from lust. If you are very angry, always recite and respect Guanshiyin Bodhisattva, and you will be free from anger. If you are very ignorant and delusional, you will be able to get rid of delusion by always reciting the words "Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva". Infinitely, Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva has such great and powerful divine power as it really is, and it is of great benefit to all sentient beings. Therefore, all living beings should always be mindful of it. If a woman desires a man and worships and makes offerings to Guanshiyin Bodhisattva, she will give birth to a man of merit and wisdom. If she desires a woman, she will give birth to a daughter of merit and wisdom. She will have the foundation of virtue and be loved and respected by everyone. Infinite Intention Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva has such power, if there are sentient beings who worship Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva respectfully, the blessings will not be donated, and all living beings should accept and uphold the name of Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva.
