About This Novel
In the middle of the Jing Dynasty, the fortunes of the country turned from prosperity to decline. The Shen family in the south of the Yangtze River was a family of nobles, a family of poets and rituals, wealthy merchants, and a local clan. It had four major foundations: the palace in the capital, the gardens in Suzhou, the ancient water village, and the pear garden in the state city. Poetry and wine linger in the pavilions, human relationships are entangled in the deep houses, profits come and go on the business road, joys and sorrows are performed on the stage, and fireworks continue to exist in the countryside. The shackles of etiquette trap the children in the boudoir, the chaos in the court threatens the fate of the family, and the old and new trends of thought quietly collide with the old order. When prosperity is at its peak, everyone knows that prosperity lasts forever; when turmoil gradually arises, conflicts among all parties arise. From the palace full of beauty to the fall of the wind and rain, from the family staying together to being scattered all over the world, princes, ladies, actors, servants, and villagers, countless people are trapped in the cage of the times and their families, struggling and unable to control themselves. When the garden is deserted and the play breaks, and the ancestral temple is covered with dust, and I look back at the ups and downs of my life, I realize that the glory of the world is just a big dream.
