About This Novel
In the third year of Guangxu's reign, the century-old osmanthus tree exploded in Jixi, southern Anhui Province. The blind third wife predicted that "the soul of the osmanthus tree will be reincarnated and will undergo three calamities." Hu Guisen, an orphan, left his hometown at the age of fourteen and worked his way from a Langxi fried dough stick stall to Hankou Pier. With a bowl of hot noodles, hard work and a kind heart, he carved out a "half-red" business landscape in the bustling Jiangcheng - he opened Qingyuan Restaurant and founded Hu Yuantai Teahouse. In the ups and downs of troubled times, he experienced the turmoil of the trade world and the flames of war, and finally returned home blind. He built hundreds of miles of roads, provided relief to thousands of people, and secretly helped the revolution. He used his seventy-three years of life to interpret the Huizhou merchants' faith of "you will reap melons if you sow melons, and you will reap beans if you sow melons". This is a legend based on a real person. It is a businessman's persistence and redemption in troubled times. It is also a long scroll of social customs from the late Qing Dynasty to the early days of New China.
