About This Novel
Wedge: The Last New Year February 16, 2026, New Year's Eve of Yisi Year, Pingjiang City. Criminal investigation captain Chen Wu received the last alarm call of the year in the duty room. In the old house "Tingyuxuan" in the south of the city, 82-year-old Zhou Mingde, a returned overseas Chinese from Nanyang, was found dead in the locked study. There were no signs of fighting at the scene. There was a lunar calendar spread out on the desk, and the word "Bingwu" was heavily circled with a red pen. The forensic doctor initially identified it as cardiac arrest, but Chen Wu noticed three abnormalities: the deceased held a rusty horse-shaped copper coin in his right hand; the only window in the study was sealed from the inside with tape, but half a fingerprint that did not belong to anyone in the house was found on the tape; the deceased wrote "They are back" on the title page of the lunar calendar before he died. Outside the window, the first bell of the Bingwu Year of the Horse rang through the thick fog of Pingjiang River.
