About This Novel

Protagonist: Liu Yanzhi (alias Pang Da, 1897-2012, mechanical engineer from Tianjin) Liu Yanzhi was born in Tianjin in 1897. When he was young, he learned his talent in mechanics from the "Pictures of Firearms in the Shenji Camp". In 1927, he went into exile in Berlin, Germany to study. In 1937, he was shocked by the massacre in Nanjing during the "July 7th Incident" and resolutely interrupted his studies. On August 15, he took a flight from Germany with his skills to return to China. He arrived in Tianjin in the early morning and saw that his hometown was devastated. After meeting Chiang Kai-shek, he joined the 358th Division of the National Army to improve the "Made in Hanyang". After witnessing its corruption, he switched to the 129th Division of the Eighth Route Army in the same year. He used spinning wheel parts to transform gun barrels in Yan'an and upgraded weapons with indigenous methods in Taihang Mountain, becoming the core backbone of the CCP's military industry. From modifying artillery to fight against US tanks to solving the problem of precision valves at nuclear test bases, he devoted his life's efforts to the country's important weapons. He died in Beijing in 2012 at the age of 115, leaving behind 76 design manuscripts and a gear collection spanning a century. During the 2019 National Day military parade, when new mechanical heavy equipment passed through Tiananmen, his bronze pocket watch was quietly displayed in the museum - one side was engraved with the outline of the mechanical prosthesis of the Berlin Laboratory, and the other side reflected the steel glory of national defense in the new era, witnessing a craftsman using gears as blades to cut through the centuries-old legend of the national destiny.
