Fifteen Years of Life
About This Novel
The locust plague that year took away my harvest and the annual grain for the inspection master. The father, mother and little sister were beaten to death at the entrance of the village by the inspector. Their blood dyed the loess into black mud. From the day I arrived at the dock in Hangzhou to carry cargo, there were only two words left in my life: alive. When a wild dog ate me, I pretended to be dead and stabbed its neck with a broken bone. When I was beaten by a gangster, I pretended to beg for mercy and sprinkled lime powder into his eyes. Ten years later, the name "Black Harrier" frightened merchant ships on the Qiantang River. Now when I was sitting at the table in the tavern, Inspector Qian raised his glass tremblingly: "Please give me a favor from Mr. Black Harrier..." I looked at that familiar yet unfamiliar face, and the porcelain cup in my hand was twisted into powder.
