In the tenth year after the Anshi Rebellion broke out (765 AD), the main forces of the Tang Dynasty withdrew to suppress the rebellion, and the Western Regions lost contact with the Central Plains for many years. Tubo took the opportunity to launch a massive invasion, capturing Hexi and Longyou prefectures, cutting off the connection between the four Anxi towns (Qiuci, Khotan, Shule, and Yanqi) and the imperial court. The Anxi army became a "homeless soldier" hanging outside the Great Wall. The countries in the Western Regions either relied on Tibet or wavered. War broke out frequently among the oasis city-states. The Silk Road was cut off, and the former prosperity was reduced to scorched earth.
