Synopsis

The Zhang Wenxiang Assassination Case (the Ma Assassination Case, 1870, Jiangning)

Ma Xinyi, Viceroy of Liangjiang, was publicly stabbed to death by Zhang Wenxiang while returning home from a military review. The official verdict was that Zhang Wenxiang had acted out of personal resentment. A popular account claimed that the men had sworn brotherhood, but Ma had betrayed him by taking his wife.
