People believe that Zeroing is a life-saving remedy left behind by the ancients. The truth, however, is that it is an eternal prison woven by the first generation of court historians. The nine cycles of civilization were not orderly resets designed to preserve the species. Someone deliberately locked evolution's limits in place, forcing each generation to slaughter itself. The protagonist, Shen Du, is the timekeeper and the only continuous individual across all nine cycles. In his first eight lives, he personally carried out the failsafe that wiped out the world. In this life, after his memories are stripped away, he is both consumed by the guilty souls of his past selves and tears through layer upon layer of lies in the ruins. At last, he stands at a crossroads, facing the ultimate choice between two paths.
