In 1982, Li Chaoyang transmigrates into the body of a young technician at a state-owned machinery factory in Northeast China. Waiting for him are sixty gear-reducer housings that have been returned.
The drawings are unchanged, and the inspection records are all there, yet the parts just won't fit properly once they reach the customer.
Bringing modern manufacturing experience and an industrial technology archive with him, he investigates the returned parts with the veteran workers and modifies the fixtures, testing them again and again on old machine tools. The repaired parts are delivered, and even a different operator can produce acceptable ones. Soon, customers start coming to them: “Could you modify a set for us, too?”
Starting with technical improvements on the factory floor, Li Chaoyang hopes to work with these laborers to build better machine tools and essential equipment.
And his reunion with his middle-school classmate Xu Huining makes him, after years of being consumed by work, start taking his life outside the factory seriously too.
