Shen Du is the night-shift forensic examiner at Jiangcheng Funeral Home. Every body no one else will touch ends up with him.
Then one night, he examines a woman who died "without a wound." A bloody mark rises on her palm, and the dead woman's voice enters his ear: "Don't trust anyone in a white coat."
That's when he learns he can hear the final seven seconds of the dead's last words.
One after another, cold cases are solved with his help. But the bloody marks on every corpse's palm all point to the same name: the Bloodmark Society.
When the marks spell out his own name for the first time, Shen Du finally understands: he isn't the one who was chosen. He's the one who was stolen.
Beneath Jiangcheng, the "Corpse Whisperers" follow a set of rules: those who can hear the dead must either join the Society or be silenced.
Shen Du chooses a third path.
