Dust and Sand Calibration

Shen Yan, a graduate student in geotechnical engineering, enters the Federation's practical surveying competition armed with her expertise in ground stress and pore-water pressure.

The competition itself is legal and open to the public, but as a student, she is strictly forbidden from competing for prize money. She can only hide her identity behind safety goggles and join her teammates to form the Ground Balance team, relying on low-frequency vibrations through the rock strata to send messages.

Vibration-based communication has a fatal flaw: stray sensory impressions seep into the signals, often making them nonsensical, and every misinterpretation could trigger a cave-in.

Their rivals, the Rocksplitter team, know every loophole in the rules and use geological disturbance devices to create fissures, intent on claiming the reward for the rock cores.

While others use brute force to break the rock, Shen Yan searches only for stress thresholds, redirects water pressure, and turns the opposition's force against them, using geotechnical theory to disable their equipment.

Deep in the caverns lies a mysterious subterranean pulse that cannot be part of any artificial simulation. Someone is watching her ability to control the strata from the shadows.

The cameras capture her distinctive surveying methods, and a professor at her university recognizes her. The threat of her identity being exposed closes in.

She must win the competition, keep her identity hidden, and uncover the secret behind the subterranean pulse.

When engineering theory meets unknown phenomena underground, she uses the earth as her measure, recalibrating every rule beneath the dust and sand.
