The story takes place in the world between life and death: the Sea of Returning Souls.
All souls burdened by deep obsessions, shattered memories, or an unsettled end come to the ferry crossing. Its purpose is not to judge, but to help souls see themselves clearly before they leave: which memories are true, which obsessions are false, which pain must be let go, and which choices they still have to answer for.
The protagonist, Shen Zhiwei, begins as a low-ranking soul cleanser at the Seventh Ferry Crossing.
His ability is called “A Thousand Lives Across the Ferry”: he can enter a soul’s parallel life and temporarily become that person, taking on their body, memories, desires, fears, and limitations.
But he cannot directly change the original world’s outcome. He can only witness, feel, and understand, then wash away the dust that blinded the soul to itself when he returns.
As the story unfolds, he discovers that cleansing does not erase pain; it helps people recognize the meaning behind it once more.
Leadership is not choosing for others, but lighting a lamp in the dark so they can find the way themselves.
