Tai means great, supreme and boundless; the highest values virtue. Yi means change: the sun and moon trade places, and yin and yang alternate. Thus the Dao transforms through change, change contains the Supreme Ultimate, and from it the Two Principles are born. Creation brings the heavens and earth into being and governs the myriad gods.
The path of the gods is to uphold the duties of Heaven and watch over all living things.
Those who create the world and bring all things into being are gods. Those who summon clouds, bring rain, and command thunder and lightning are gods. Those who govern mountains and rivers and turn the seasons are gods. Totemic spirits who protect homes and families are gods. Ancestor spirits of fallen warriors, who receive offerings of incense, are gods.
And this is a world of divine power.
