Su Wu had a dream. She dreamed she had become a tiny baby, and that the heavens told her she was their most cherished child.
Then Su Wu woke up!
She really had become a tiny baby, one who had just been born!
“Another useless girl!”
“What bad luck. Hurry up and throw it out. We can’t afford to raise it!”
“Mother, you can’t!”
“She’s my daughter. We can’t throw her away!”
“Fourth Son, it’s not that I’m heartless. Your wife has already given birth to four useless girls. This is the fifth!”
“Our family really can’t afford to raise another one!”
“Mother, she’s my daughter. I’ll raise her myself!”
“Oh, so your wings have grown strong, and now you won’t listen to your mother?”
“Fine! If you want to raise her yourself, then do it yourself!”
“Old man, split up the family. Send Fourth Son and his family out, and do it now!”
Wrapped haphazardly in a piece of rag, Su Wu listened to the noisy voices outside and let out a loud cry.
All right, she just wanted to ask the heavens: Is this how you treat your most cherished child?
