A Farmer's Tales of Striving

The villagers often gossiped about Ju Laosan behind his back, and even his own relatives looked down on him, all because he had three daughters in a row without a son. Ju Laosan and his wife refused to accept their fate. No son? So what? If their three daughters made something of themselves, they still had a future to look forward to. Years later, Ju Laosan and his wife became the envy of everyone in the surrounding villages. Their eldest daughter built a factory from scratch, their second daughter took up both farming and livestock breeding, and their third daughter earned the least, but was the first person in the village to go away to college the proper way. Someone asked Ju Laosan the secret to his family’s good life. He took a sip of tea and replied with a smile, “There’s no secret. Just don’t look down on girls.”
