Secrets of the Old House

After her grandmother passed away, Song Jin went back to the countryside, preparing to clean up the old house and leave after the funeral. The old house is in a small village called Huaian in southern Anhui. It has blue bricks and black tiles, with three entrances and three exits. It was renovated the year my grandmother got married. Grandma lived to be ninety-three years old and never left this village or this house in her life. Song Jin lived at her grandmother's house for three summer vacations when she was a child. She remembered the moss in the patio, the dry well in the backyard, and the room on the second floor that was always locked. Grandma never let her near that room. Now that grandma is gone, it's up to her to open the key. While sorting out the belongings, Song Jin found a set of seven keys under her grandmother's pillow. But she counted over and over again in the old house, and there were only six keyholes. Which door does the extra key open? She didn't have time to think about this problem. Because on the first night when she was sorting out her belongings, Aunt Wang from next door came to the door. "Girl Jin," Aunt Wang lowered her voice and glanced in the direction of the old house, "your grandmother's room... The one at the east end of the second floor, do you know what's in it?" "I don't know. Grandma won't let me in." Aunt Wang pursed her lips, as if she was hesitating whether to say something. "Your grandma is gone, and there are some things I should let you know." That night, Song Jin knew three things. The first thing: Grandma is not a local. She had fled from another province and had no household registration or files. She even changed her name after marrying into the Song family. Her real name, no one knows. The second thing: Grandma did a big thing in the village when she was young and saved the whole village.
