Iron wind and the way home
The evening wind blew across the bridge across the river, bringing with it the moist coolness of the river.
Xia Tian was leaning on the cold bridge railing, with the surging river water at his feet. A stray orange cat with mottled fur rubbed gently against her trouser leg. She bent down, reached out and took the kitten into her arms, naming it the cat.
Xia Tian is an orphan.
Her parents have been gone for as long as she can remember. If her neighbor Aunt Zhang hadn't been kind-hearted and took her into her home to raise her alone, she would have no idea where she would grow up. Aunt Zhang comes from an ordinary family and lives a tight life, but she has never treated Xia Tian badly. A bowl of hot rice, a warm coat, and countless gentle reminders late at night are the only light in a gloomy childhood in summer.
The peaceful days did not last long.
The bad news came unexpectedly: Aunt Zhang was diagnosed with cancer. In order to treat the disease, the family spent all their savings and incurred a foreign debt. Even though she tried her best, the disease still took her away mercilessly.
