Embers of the Spirit Flame

On the Lingjin Continent, all things possess spirit, and spiritual fire reigns supreme. At birth, everyone has a wisp of “spiritual fire” kindled inside them, determining their talent and destiny for life. Yet for the past three hundred years, spiritual fires have been going out irreversibly. This phenomenon, known as “Lingjin,” has turned a third of the continent into lifeless lands without spiritual fire. Ye Chen was born with his spiritual fire forcibly extracted. As an “Emberborn,” he struggles to survive at the very bottom of a society ruled by spiritual fire. After a near-death experience, he unexpectedly awakens a forbidden power called “Devouring Embers,” which lets him absorb and claim the remaining spiritual energy of dying flames. But this power is no divine gift. Every wisp of ember-fire he devours forces him to inherit its former owner's most painful memories. Worse, his power comes from the same source as the ancient entity known as the “Flame Eater,” which caused the Lingjin catastrophe. Every time he uses it, he hastens the awakening of that terrifying being. As Ye Chen grows stronger, he gradually discovers that the Lingjin disaster is no natural calamity but a man-made conspiracy. Behind the power struggles of the various factions lies a shocking deception spanning a thousand years. He must find a balance between growing stronger and destroying himself, make choices between trust and betrayal, and ultimately face an impossible dilemma: saving the world requires him to become the Flame Eater, but refusing to become it means the world will be destroyed.
