O Soul, Return! Come Back to Your Old Home!

From The Summoning of Souls in The Songs of Chu: The Emperor said to Wu Yang, "There is someone below whom I wish to aid. Soul, return! Why leave your accustomed home and wander to the four corners? Why abandon the place where you found joy and depart for those ill-omened lands? Soul, return! The East is no place to dwell. There, giants stand a thousand fathoms tall, seeking only souls. Ten suns rise in turn, melting gold and stone. Those who live there are accustomed to it, but any soul who goes will be lost. Return! You cannot take refuge there. Soul, return! The South is no place to linger. Vipers throng the land, and foxes roam for a thousand miles. Nine-headed male serpents dart back and forth, swallowing people to feed their appetites. Return! Do not linger there. Soul, return! The West is perilous, with a thousand miles of flowing sand. If you escape it, beyond lies a vast wasteland. Red ants are as large as elephants, black hornets as big as pots. No grain grows there; people feed on grass and reeds. The soil rots the flesh, and no water can be found. You wander without shelter, in an endless expanse. Return! I fear you will fall victim to its dangers. Soul, return! The North is no place to linger. Return! Do not stay long. Soul, return! You must not ascend to Heaven. Nine gates guarded by tigers and leopards, who prey upon those below. A man with nine heads uproots nine thousand trees. Wolves with eyes set sideways roam in packs, hanging people up for sport and throwing them into deep abysses. Only after their lives are offered to the Emperor can they find rest. Return! Going there will endanger your life. Soul, return! You must not descend into this dark underworld. There, thick-lipped, bloody-fingered beings pursue people. Three-eyed, tiger-headed creatures have bodies like oxen. They all hunger for human flesh. Return! I fear you will bring disaster upon yourself. Soul, return! Enter through the gates of the capital. Qin baskets and Qi silk, Zheng cotton and fine gauze. All the calling gear is ready; the summons rings out long and loud. Soul, return! Come back to your old home."
