One moment, Lin Wan is lying on the soft bed in her rented apartment, working late into the night. The next, she opens her eyes in an old dormitory building where sunlight never shines.
Outside the window, there are no city skyscrapers or streetlights, only endless gray fog. This is another world shrouded in an eerie power.
A crumpled, yellowed note appears out of nowhere beside her bed. It is covered in bloodcurdling rules for surviving the dormitory. Break even one, and the "thing" lurking in the halls will take you away.
The corridors warp and twist at midnight. Whispers that do not belong to the living come from the rooms next door. Never look too long into the hallway mirrors. Under no circumstances should you answer a knock at your door in the middle of the night...
In her panic, Lin Wan discovers she isn't the only outsider. The dormitory is full of ordinary people like her, dragged there from the real world. Some break down and go mad, while others betray their companions to stay alive. Faced with the threat of death, the worst of human nature is laid bare.
She was just an ordinary office worker, with no extraordinary combat skills. All she has is a cool head and a keen eye. By studying the rules one by one and working out which ones are real, she tries to evade the ever-present horrors while probing the underlying truth of this other world.
She meets Xie Jin, a mysterious man who always keeps apart from the others. No one knows whether he is human or part of this world itself.
Through one deadly trial after another, in the narrow space between life and death, Lin Wan must fight not only monsters but also human selfishness as she searches for a way out of the endless dormitory and back to the real world.
