In the dead of night, flames engulf the Qin estate and cries of battle fill the air. Five-year-old Qin Yu is shaken awake by Yu Shi and sees his father, Qin Mubai, shot dead by a hail of arrows as he covers their escape. His seven-year-old sister, Qin Zhen, takes his hand, and with their servant Zhou Huaicheng and Yu Shi’s guards protecting them, they flee through a secret passage. The Chancellor Wang Yanling’s covert guards hold off the pursuers as the four escape into the mountains outside the city. But their enemies set the mountains ablaze, and a sea of fire sweeps toward them. Just as Qin Yu thinks he is doomed, a flash of white light appears before his eyes and time and space fall into disarray. When he wakes, they are in another dense forest, and beyond the mountains lies a strange imperial city with banners snapping in the wind and towering palace halls. They have arrived in the previous dynasty.
