Huai City has an unwritten rule:
For weddings, don't ask where they came from. For funerals, don't ask where they're going.
After inheriting the ancestral Shengdu Hall, Jiang Du receives his first wedding order: the bride has been dead for seven years, the groom has no face, and the officiant is his sister, who disappeared fourteen years ago.
At midnight, eight bearers carry a blood-red wedding sedan into the city. Whoever accepts the invitation must see the dead man's wedding through to the end.
To find his sister, Jiang Du opens the wedding and funeral ledgers, breaking off the dead's engagements, arranging burials for the living, and collecting on old debts amid one folk taboo after another.
But gradually, he discovers that the most terrifying thing in this world has never been ghosts.
It's someone writing the names of the living into the ledgers of the underworld.
