In 2037, strange phenomena are on the rise across near-future Huaguo. Uncontrolled fragments from outer space are scattered through the cities, genetically modified superhumans hide among ordinary people, extraordinary artifacts lost for a thousand years are resurfacing one after another, and underground foreign forces are infiltrating in secret. Conventional forces are powerless to respond. The nation secretly establishes the Jingheng Bureau of Unusual Affairs, Huaxia’s own agency for superpowered operatives, to guard the hidden line that keeps order in a world unseen by ordinary people.
Jiang Chen, a graduate student in physics whose parents mysteriously vanished ten years ago in a bizarre supernatural case, has been quietly investigating for years. He is unexpectedly caught up in a strange urban incident, and thanks to his professional expertise and connection to the case, he is recruited by the Jingheng branch under special circumstances.
The bureau’s action team is full of exceptional talents: a cool-headed tactical commander, a top mechanical engineer, an intelligence agent who senses energy, a veteran special-forces assault expert, and a field consultant versed in ancient methods and supernatural abilities. Riding in modified special-purpose hover vehicles, they race through alleys between skyscrapers, underground laboratories, and abandoned ancient ruins, solving one bizarre urban case after another.
The mysterious organization known as the Guixu Society, which has been lying low for years, repeatedly strikes from the shadows, stealing alien wreckage and conducting illegal human experiments in pursuit of the power to overturn the order of the world. Foreign superpowered organizations, alien survivors stranded on Earth, and secrets buried for a thousand years all begin to surface. As Jiang Chen investigates the truth behind his parents’ disappearance and leads his team through a struggle between competing forces, he shoulders the hidden responsibility of protecting the city amid the currents where technology and the supernatural intertwine.
