In the near future, in 2048, a body-eating virus breaks out around the world. The virus is released by melting polar glaciers and spreads rapidly through air and water sources, with a fatality rate of 90%. Infected people initially suffer from high fever and confusion, and later completely lose their minds and turn into extremely aggressive "rotten corpses". The virus continues to mutate, and some rotten corpses have evolved special abilities such as speed, strength, and night vision.
