During the late Tang, as Zhu Wen usurps the dynasty, An Li, nephew of Privy Council Commissioner Jiang Xuanhui, and Jiang Tie, his son, are entrusted by Empress Dowager He to escort the palace maids A Qian and A Qiu, both pregnant with imperial heirs, as well as her nieces He Mei and He Mengnan, to safety by land and water.
An Li leads his men through Xinye, taking in refugees, then to Yicheng to welcome the imperial heir, and on to Jiangzhou, where he battles local strongmen. He establishes a foothold by founding An Manor, an oasis in Hongzhou. Jiang Tie takes He Mei and He Meng south by water, slaughtering Zhu Wen’s old household and abducting his daughter Ning Zhen along the way, before settling in Hangzhou.
With flight through a time of chaos at its heart, the novel weaves together the choices individuals must make between loyalty and survival. Through An Li and the others protecting the bloodline of the Tang imperial house and building a safe haven, it portrays the suffering of ordinary people amid the late Tang’s wars between regional powers, their longing for peace, the struggles of human nature, and the resilience of civilization. This is a sweeping, artfully conceived historical epic rich in meaning. It places personal destinies amid the tumult of a great age, using masterful storytelling and profound human compassion to paint a magnificent picture of the blood and fire, love and loyalty, despair and hope of the late Tang and Five Dynasties period. The work shows considerable ambition and achievement in its literary, intellectual, and artistic merits, excelling in its creation of historical atmosphere, its portrayal of complex human nature, and its exploration of moral principles in chaotic times. Though there is room to improve the pacing and the depth of some characters, its overall artistic appeal, intellectual weight, and distinctive aesthetic value deserve high praise. For readers who enjoy historical fiction, tales of chivalry, and classical literature, this is a compelling work that rewards reflection.
