This is an alternate-history novel set in the mid-to-late Ming dynasty.
Through the wars that run throughout the book, it presents readers with as realistic a picture as possible of Ming society, including its military, politics, economy, culture, customs, and more.
Though the story is set in an imagined history, the vast majority of its events and wars are based on real, verifiable sources.
The story is structured as a trilogy.
Part One, The Siege, immerses readers in the era through a sweeping depiction of a siege, letting them experience the reality of warfare.
Part Two, The Previous Life, explores the protagonist’s background and growth, offering a comprehensive portrait of society in the mid-to-late Ming dynasty.
Part Three, The Heavenly Question, depicts society in all its complexity during the dynasty’s final days and brings the story to its conclusion.
This is a fairly hard-edged work, with war as its central thread from beginning to end. Readers will find passion and loyalty, as well as political scheming and deceit, but no shallow power fantasy that ignores the limits of its historical setting.
In short, this is a work that demands a particular kind of reader. If you are discerning about what you read, know a great deal about history, or want to see the past as it really was rather than dressed up for effect...
Then you are unlikely to be disappointed. All comments and discussion are welcome.
After watching this episode, I have a stronger desire to visit the cities outside Shanhaiguan.
There are all kinds of ways to claim credit. Good things are the result of your own guidance, and bad things are the result of instigation from others.
What a great occasion, so excited to watch
I used to ignore the power of this kind of publicity, but now, I can only admire it
When it's all rotten, hurry up and pour it down. If you can, just push it.
Aren't there rumors (often true) that I'm coming back?
Artillery's dimensionality reduction attack on Miao soldiers! ! !
I have been chasing the book all the way here, and I have read this chapter three times. It is not worth it to the old man. The dirty officials of those dog officials who read the book to the dog's belly are worthy of the incompetence of the Ming Emperor. They only suffered the common people, worked hard all their lives, and allowed themselves to be slaughtered.
One of the walls of my elementary school was borrowed from the city wall of Bijie City. The stone wall is really not very high. It is estimated that the original height was only three or four meters. Moreover, the stone wall is not thick, and the bottom width is only about two meters. Therefore, in history, whether it was Miao soldiers or officers and soldiers, they were all defeated with one blow. Moreover, Bijie City is surrounded by mountains and has no defensive advantages. Speaking of which, Guiyang's city wall is also made of stone and is not too high.
I am from Bijie. My ancestor was a military leader who followed Fu Youde into Guizhou. I have thousands of hereditary families. Until the 1980s and 1990s, the local Han people's discrimination against the Miao people went deep into the culture and customs. Miaozi is still a curse word throughout Guizhou.
