A change of dynasties and a devastating flood leave the child prodigy Shang Hao and his childhood friend Ding Muyun homeless and bereft. They are separated from then on. Eight years later, in a bid to restore the nation to greatness, the ruler of the Jin Dynasty raises the banner of “governing the realm through culture and strengthening the nation through technology.” Deep in the sea of sand, he establishes Shangfang Academy to gather talented people from across the land and cultivate promising young minds.
Gifted youths and spoiled young masters arrive in droves. Shang Hao, a secret agent burdened with a blood feud, reunites at the academy with Ding Muyun, now a beggar, and the two form an alliance with a prince living under an assumed identity.
