The male protagonist originally worked as a gofer at a third-rate detective and mystery club in Beijing. After being double-crossed by corrupt police, he unexpectedly transmigrates to the Ming dynasty. When he first arrives, he is little more than a good-for-nothing. He manages to scrape by using a few tricks of his own and is fortunate enough to receive help from some people. By a series of mishaps, he later becomes a low-ranking Embroidered Uniform Guard. He thinks he can finally throw his weight around by borrowing his superiors' authority, only to find himself, rather unfortunately, noticed by his boss! He follows his superior north to the frontier, where they infiltrate a Mongol tribe and go undercover. Then, somehow, he ends up provoking a major battle...
