Chronicles of Chunhe: The Eldest Daughter's Plan to Run the Family

During the Qingli era of the Northern Song, eldest daughter Su He is left to struggle through life on three meager acres of farmland after both her parents die, with only her young brother and frail sister to care for. Drawing on her deep knowledge of agricultural texts and her precise understanding of the seasons, she improves rice varieties, digs canals to channel water, and skillfully manages relations with her neighbors. From an “orphan girl” looked down on by the villagers, she grows into “Madam Su,” a woman capable of managing a hundred-acre estate. Along the way, she gets caught up in historical events including the implementation of the Green Sprouts policy, famine during years of disaster, and the expansion of trade routes. She also joins forces with Lin Yan, a scholar fallen on hard times, to overcome one crisis after another. In the end, she lifts her family from poverty to local prominence and earns a place in the county annals as a peasant woman. The story’s satisfying highlights center on the protagonist using “practical wisdom” to solve each crisis, such as foiling a land-deed plot through “careful tax calculations” and keeping tenants loyal with “tiered profit sharing.” With no golden finger, she advances one careful step at a time.
