In the Fields of Hope

In the twelfth month of 1979, Song Xinhuo, a discharged soldier with no prospects, returns to his hometown of Zhaosong Village, where people say, "Better to lose money than marry a man from the Zhao or Song families." Unexpectedly, the old Party secretary of the village takes a liking to him. Risking accusations of profiteering, Song takes the lead in introducing the household responsibility system. From then on, he steps into the sweeping historical picture of China's early days of reform and opening up.
