People of Eastern Anhui: 2026 Edition

The story combines the dramatic intensity of cries to "fight for life," family vendettas, blood-written letters, forced marriages, surrogacy, catching adulterers, and false accusations with a vivid sense of everyday life, painting a portrait of humanity where joy and sorrow intertwine. The protagonist, Zhang Caiyun, is teased by the villagers as "the monkey spirit who performs shadow plays." Her life is a legend of a woman in her time.

The novel Households of Eastern Anhui follows the changing fortunes of an ordinary farming family over fifty years, from 1958 to 2008. After her husband dies young, mother Zhang Caiyun raises three children alone, weathering trials of life and death, entrepreneurship, honor, and disgrace. With exceptional wisdom and resilience, she not only brings up her children but also leads her family and even the entire village out of poverty amid the tides of change, becoming a pioneer of rural reform. Through the changing fortunes of Zhang Caiyun's family, the story reflects the history of China's countryside, from collectivization to household responsibility, then through reform and opening up to prosperity.
