I’m Not Easy to Placate

The mighty Gu Baiyan finally admitted that he’d been blind all these years: he’d never realized that Bei Le was a woman disguised as a man.

Even more astonishing, Bei Le was actually the “Little Beile,” someone the Four Great Families wouldn’t dare offend.

And he’d been treating Bei Le like a spoiled, dimwitted brat, raising him as one of his own.

When Young Master Bei couldn’t finish his homework, Mr. Gu did it for him.

When Young Master Bei couldn’t fight, Mr. Gu fought for him.

When Young Master Bei somehow ended up with two children, Mr. Gu raised them.

One day, the adorable babies called out in their babyish voices, “Mama, pick us up!”

Pointing at Bei Le, Gu Baiyan corrected them impatiently: “That idiot is your dad.”

But the babies pointed at Gu Baiyan and burst into tears. “Daddy, you’re being mean!”

“You’ve got it wrong. I’m not your dad. If you can’t remember and keep calling me that, I’ll throw all three of you out!” Mr. Gu snapped.

As it turned out, children never lie.

Those two little troublemakers really were his and Bei Le’s children.

This time, Mr. Gu didn’t have to threaten to throw them out.

The two babies ran away from home with their mother, leaving behind a note written in a mix of pinyin and Chinese characters.
