The Woman Worth a Fortune

[The crafty merchant's daughter vs. the scheming court official]

Everyone said the Wen family of Ping County was piled high with gold and jade. Even their rice bowls were made of gold.

Unfortunately, Master Wen had no sons, only two daughters.

With Old Master Wen seriously ill, it looked as though the clansmen would soon strip the Wen family bare.

Wen Wan, who had just transmigrated, was in a hurry.

She urgently needed a docile, obedient live-in son-in-law.

Marquis Wei Zheng of Huai'an had been sent south to Jiangnan to investigate a case by imperial order. Ambushed and left at death's door, he was knocked unconscious by a procurer and rushed overnight to Wen Wan's bed.

After losing his memory, Wei Zheng became Zhao Heng, the Wen family's live-in son-in-law.

The hand that had once drawn a sword to take lives became a hand that cooked meals.

At last, Wen Wan discovered she was pregnant. Without hesitation, she drugged Wei Zheng unconscious and dumped him in the snowy forests of Cangshan, five hundred li away, to fend for himself.

Then, wearing a white flower in her hair and black mourning cloth around her arm, she held a lavish banquet to bid farewell to her husband, who had "died suddenly."

Whenever the people of Ping County mentioned Shopkeeper Wen, they couldn't help but sigh, "That young lady has had such a hard life!"

Her husband died, and now she had to raise her father and two children.

She might be rolling in money, but she must be suffering terribly inside.

Wen Wan dabbed her tears with a handkerchief and nodded along, afraid someone might notice how secretly delighted she was.

That was until the Wen family's vast wealth attracted envious eyes and Wen Wan was thrown into prison.

The man handling her case was none other than the famous Marquis of Huai'an.

The Wen family ran around trying to help, spending every last coin, but the case made no progress.

In the prison, the man in blue robes asked her, his features cold and stern,

"Shopkeeper Wen, I hear you once swore never to remarry and to remain faithful to your late husband for the rest of your life?"

Wen Wan trembled. Big brother, I've learned my lesson. Please let me go.
