Top Scholar Three Times Over in the Tang Dynasty, Then I Learned My Father Slew a Dragon in His Dream

He transmigrates to the Tang Dynasty during the Zhenguan era and becomes Wei Shuyu, son of Wei Zheng, a renowned chancellor of the early Tang.

Under the Zhenguan Reign, politics are clean, society is orderly, and the people are prosperous: the empire is enjoying a golden age. The imperial court has greatly expanded the civil service examinations.

Wei Shuyu takes the examinations and comes first at every stage: the provincial, metropolitan, and palace examinations. He sweeps the board, earning the titles of provincial, metropolitan, and palace examination laureate.

Wei Shuyu had hoped to rely on his impeccable political instincts and his status as top scholar to make his mark in the Tang Dynasty, achieve great things, and be remembered for all time. But when he returns home from the Daming Palace, he is stunned to hear that his father has dreamed of slaying a dragon.

“Which dragon?”

“Something like... the Dragon King of the Jing River...”

Hearing his father Wei Zheng's words, Wei Shuyu's heart sinks. “I studied hard for over ten years and became the top scholar, only to find out this is Journey to the West?”
