This is the first novel with a western fantasy setting. I always thought magic was very boring. What's the point of two people chanting spells at each other like in Harry Potter? It wasn't until I encountered the battle in the Whispering Forest that I realized what a magical duel was. Cedros and Rodhart are my two favorite characters in the whole book. When Cedros must die and Rodhart takes a 180-degree turn, there is really a feeling that something beautiful has been crushed. The whole novel gives people the feeling of being helpless and inevitably leading to destruction.
