From the hefty books at rental shops to paperbacks from Xinhua Bookstore, then on to online ebooks and web reading, I’ve spent thirteen years reading online fiction. I’ve read an enormous amount. Some works shone briefly before fading away, some stood the test of time and became classics, some stayed quiet until they suddenly took off, and others took years to reach their full potential. Times move forward, and as the number of books grows, it gets harder to sort through them all, much like the history of Hong Kong cinema. What’s heartening is that as creators and the readership grow, writers keep innovating and pushing literature forward. Since this list has limited space, I’ve included only some books I personally think are worth reading. The years covered begin with the online boom in 2007 and run through the present, a full ten years!
