A Steady Rise to the Top

The tenth year of the Wanli reign: an age of gathering storms. Zhang Juzheng’s time in power is drawing to a close. The Wanli Emperor is restless, Empress Dowager Li is caught between two sides, and Feng, the “Chief Eunuch,” schemes in secret. The Tartars in the north watch hungrily, while Qi Jiguang stands ready for battle. The venerable Hai Rui is growing old, and the court is rife with open and covert power struggles. The Japanese pirate menace is hard to eradicate, but Qi Jiguang’s army is making a stunning show of force. Song and dance fill the air, as scholars and poets revel in an age of elegance. The tides of the realm rise with our generation. When Yang Zhen makes his entrance, his power will amaze all. This is the age in which he is destined to take center stage!
