Many friends who are girls at heart have chatted with me and always want to ask if time-travel could be achieved, which era would be the best? And I always answer in a very ignorant way: Just live in the present. If you travel to any time in ancient times, you will never survive more than two episodes!  Some people think, weren't there several prosperous times in ancient times? If you travel to the prosperous times, you can't be wrong, right? Indeed, history always moves forward in the alternation of governance and chaos. Great governance such as Wenjing, Zhenguan, Song Renzong, Ming Renxuan, the prosperous era of Kangxi, Yongzheng and Qianlong, among which the most praised ones are none other than the prosperous era of Renzong of Song Dynasty! There are four general criteria for historians to judge prosperous times: 1. Stable life; 2. Economic prosperity; 3. Cultural prosperity; 4. Population increase. As far as these four points are concerned, the Renzong Dynasty barely meets the requirements, but the living standards of the people at the bottom are not considered! This makes no sense! Historians commented on the prosperous age of Renzong: the world was full of Yongxi, the wilderness was peaceful, scholars and farmers were happy in their work, and the civil and military were loyal and good. But what is the reality? Let me analyze it in detail!  As we all know, the Northern Song Dynasty suffered more defeats than wins in its foreign wars, but even during the Renzong period, known as the prosperous age, the military was in a mess! In 1038 AD, Dangxiang Li Yuanhao proclaimed himself the emperor and founded the country. The country was named Daxia. In order to be recognized by the Song Dynasty, he launched wars one after another! Song Xia fought against Sanchuankou in the first battle, then fought against Shuichuan, and fought in Dingchuan Village three times. What was disappointing was that the Song Dynasty was defeated in three battles, losing dozens of generals, tens of thousands of soldiers, countless grain, grass, horses and baggage, and was even forced to sign an unequal treaty with Xixia! The losses of the war and the annual gifts to Xixia will undoubtedly be passed on to the people! Since the battlefield was on the border between Song and Xia, it naturally did not directly affect many civilians, but it increased the burden on farmers. This is really not what a prosperous era should be like!  As for the economy, in terms of total GDP, the Renzong era did reach its peak, with the highest income reaching 44 million yuan, dozens of times that of the peak period of the Tang Dynasty! However, if the national treasury has money, will people's lives be better? Uncertain! A true wise king knows how to hide wealth from the people, rather than drain it and fish for it! In the Song Dynasty, land annexation was serious and collusion between officials and gentry was rampant. Often, powerful and wealthy households had more land but lighter taxes, while poor people had less land and higher taxes! In an era when emperors and scholar-bureaucrats ruled the world together, the scholar-bureaucrats, as a privileged class, did not have to pay taxes. Here comes the question. The tycoons and scholar-bureaucrats who control most of the society's wealth either pay light taxes or don't pay them at all. So what supports the high GDP? The answer is of course the poor farmers! That's why the literati wrote: "The crawling child, the hunchbacked centenarian. The hungry woman chirps even more, her face is shaggy." You can imagine what a miserable picture this is!  Data show that during the 319 years of the Song Dynasty, there were more than 430 peasant uprisings, the highest number in Chinese history! There were more than 40 times during the Renzong era that was called the prosperous age, which shows that people's lives in the prosperous age were no better than at other times! The most praised thing about Renzong's prosperous period is that famous ministers and capable ministers emerged in large numbers, and literati gathered together, such as Bao Zheng, Han Qi, Fu Bi, Fan Zhongyan, Ouyang Xiu, Yan Shu, etc., As the saying goes, the stars are bright! Politically, the king is wise and the ministers are wise, the whole country is prosperous and peaceful, and the literati feel comfortable reciting poems and writing lyrics! This is of course inseparable from Renzong's generous character and the Song Dynasty's system that valued literature over military affairs! But don't forget that education was not popular at that time. It can be said that educational resources were only popularized in a small area, and the vast majority of poor people were still illiterate! For farmers who still lack adequate food and clothing, what benefits can cultural prosperity bring? Cultural prosperity benefits the privileged class of literati, officials, just like economic prosperity benefits the rich and powerful. It supports everything behind them, and it is always the poor people who pay silently! It can be said that in such a hierarchical society, the more prosperous the upper class is, the more severe the suffering of the lower class people will be! The historian who wrote the book was a member of the privileged class. Naturally, he could only see this ethereal prosperity. How could he push aside the clouds and see the suffering of the people at the bottom? What's more, the aloof Emperor Renzong?  However, one thing needs to be explained. The prosperity of economy and culture has promoted the development of science and technology. The emergence of three of the four major civilizations is not unrelated to this. In addition, water conservancy and farming technology have also been developed, and land output has been improved. This seems to benefit the people, but if you think about it carefully, it is not that simple. The increase in land output directly led to the growth of population, becoming the last standard of the prosperous age described by historians! As the population grows, tax revenue naturally increases. In this way, the burden on families has not been reduced, the suffering of the people remains the same, and the living standards have not been improved! As early as the Chunhua period, the Song Dynasty was only half a century old, and the people were already in a situation where "the rich have fields and the poor have no place to stand"! So Wang Xiaobo raised his arms and shouted: "I am suffering from the inequality between rich and poor, and now it is for you to equalize it." The poor people all responded! A massive peasant uprising did not fail to sound the alarm for the Song court. However, faced with such a serious gap between the rich and the poor, the Song court could not come up with a solution. In addition, the "three redundancies" were becoming increasingly serious, and the Renzong Dynasty was already at a critical moment! Although Fan Zhongyan's reform failed, it won a breathing space and bought time for Wang Anshi's subsequent reform! If not, Shu has no idea whether there will be a Song Dynasty after Renzong! Can such a prosperous age be called a prosperous age? Under the feudal system, prosperity was a prosperous age for the upper class, but it was a disaster for the people at the bottom!
