The Appraiser

In a modern parallel world, beneath the skyscrapers and neon lights, another order has endured for a thousand years: three hundred and sixty trades, each with its own rules. The final arbiter of all those rules is the inspector-craftsman. They produce nothing themselves; they judge just one thing: whether something is genuine or counterfeit.

This is the story of a judge in a world of craftsmanship: one case, one trade; one chapter, one craft. He examines objects and sees into people's hearts.

Recommendation: If the rules are false, let the people who inspect them rewrite them. The Inspector-Craftsman seeks the truth on behalf of every craft that refuses to compromise.
