The Bronze-Clad Divine Soldier

At dawn in Athens, before the third toll of the bell, the olive leaves on the Acropolis steps were already awake. Nineteen-year-old guard Arete donned her cold bronze armor. She won justice for an old woman who sold olives, helped a lost child find his mother, and committed every inch of the city walls, every battlement, every face to memory.

The street urchins called her "Bronze Armor Big Sis" and pelted her with fruit pits. She threw dried figs back at them. When the plague swept down the main streets, others shut their doors, but she went from house to house, carrying medicine and water. On the day Kleon, a veteran who had guarded the city for forty years, took off his armor, he placed his scarred old bronze shield in her hands. From then on, sunlight warmed the shield's face, and her vow was carved into her bones: As long as Arete remained, Athens would never fall, and the lights of the city would never go out.

Damon, a young man from the blacksmith's shop, tempered her armor and sharpened her spears. He said he would use iron from the heavens to forge her a full suit of armor. But war came sooner than promises. She waited seven days at the city gate, only to receive his corpse and a short spear engraved with her name. She wore the spear at her waist, carrying it into every battle thereafter.

Year after year, her comrades grew old, children grew up, bronze statues were raised, and songs were sung. People gradually realized that their golden-shielded general would always be nineteen, but no one found it strange. A guardian was meant to stand there forever.

Where the golden shield meets the sunset, a woman guards the city-state.

To defend one's home is not about becoming a hero. It's so the people in the city can eat and sleep in peace.
