The Drowning Child I Rescued Wasn't Human at All

Everyone thought the people who fell into the river late at night had simply slipped by accident. That is, until I couldn't bear to leave a little boy crying and trembling, so I jumped in and saved him. I felt his wrist, cold as a corpse's. I saw that he was soaked through, yet his feet were completely dry. Then I met his eyes, which held not the slightest reflection. Only then did a chill creep over me, belatedly realizing the truth: That night, I hadn't saved anyone. The thing at the bottom of the river had chosen me, softhearted yet clearheaded, to be its scapegoat.
