Nüshu Is Not a Book

Sixty years ago, Qing Li carved her last iron needle at Yuebei Pavilion. Sixty years later, Lin Zhixia wrote her first character, "peace," in a livestream. From a side room in a Jiangyong ancestral hall to a modern livestream screen, two women cross time and space, connecting through writing and becoming kindred spirits. This is an ensemble story spanning two timelines, about Nushu, women, and the passing down of a tradition. No romance. It focuses on women's awakening and breaking new ground for intangible cultural heritage. It is about Nushu, it safeguards memory, and it carries on the resilience of three generations of women. Lin Zhixia is a volunteer with the Jiangyong Nushu Research Society. She earns 2,800 yuan a month, and her livestream usually has single-digit viewership. On a snowy night, static swirled across the screen, and a hand holding an engraving needle crossed time and space, carving in sync with her. Qing Li, a Nushu practitioner from sixty years ago, wakes with no memories. Only the character "exist" on her wrist burns hot. Each needle she carves makes her forget a memory, and each character that lights up makes her body a little more transparent. When fluorescent fake walls threaten to replace the real works, and black handprints gnaw at their memories, they use "mistuned melodies" as their shield, "correcting homework" as their spear, and "sitting together to sing" as their formation, bringing Nushu out of the bottom of a chest and into broad daylight. This is not one person's legacy, but the protection of an entire village and the relay of a whole online community. As long as the characters remain, so do the people.
